Spill It: Lauren Musselman
What do the people pouring your drinks really think of you...and their job? This week we talked shop with Lauren Musselman, the bubbly gal who handles the bar 16 floors above the Theatre District at brand new rooftop spot Highbar, and she filled us in on unsexy cocktails, lame pickup lines and and what it takes to move to the front of the bar crowd.

What’s the crowd been like so far at Highbar?
Happy hour consists of a stylish after-work crowd, but later it turns into a hot, fun atmosphere. The trendsetters meet the suits at Highbar!

If Highbar and
Eden got into a fight, who would win?
I don’t frequent Eden, but Highbar used to be a swimming pool so we are very adept at chicken fighting. We don’t fight dirty, but I’d say we have the advantage.

Where do you like to chill on your off-nights?
My new fave spot is D’Or: it’s low-key, dark and has great music. Other than that, anywhere with sports on TV and a good margarita.

What drink, when ordered, makes you cringe?
MOJITOS! Sorry, but there’s nothing sexy about muddling sugar, limes and mint behind the bar.

Worst pick-up line you’ve heard?
Oh, there have been many...”My brother’s fiancée just dumped him and he’d love to take you out.”

Any drunken customer stories/ memories you can share?
All I can say is St. Patty’s Day. It’s the best and worst day to work. I know I’ve worked at least three in a row and [went] shot for shot with New York’s Finest…Always leaves a mark.

What else do you do and where do you bartend?
Just graduated with an English major and I bartend at Southern Hospitality on the weekends.

Best/worst part about the job:

Best part would be the people; I love working with the public and getting reactions—positive or negative. The good, the bad and the ugly,  it’s always fun. Worst part is probably that I inevitably wear a few of the drinks at the end of the night, but no matter what my mood is, a smile is a must ….Well I try.

Any advice for customers on how to get the bartender's attention to get that drink faster?

A strong, distinct voice will get you far. If I can hear you over the crowd, you’ll get a drink quickly. Also, wear something that makes you stand out; usually I’ll remember you and your drink order.

And finally, what’s your best advice for curing a hangover?

Hot jasmine tea and Excedrin. Never fails.
