We interview a lot of people who like to drink, and we almost always ask them for their best hangover remedies. And since New Year's Eve is coming up (and with it the wretched morning after), we figured it'd be nice to share our favorites with you. From pickle juice to Pedialyte, egg whites to Excedrin, there's hopefully something here to fix you up. And if there isn't, then you should either go back to sleep or go to the hospital. (Or you can just skip the article below and use this handy cheat sheet: Have another drink!)
So, what's your best hangover cure?
Brian Miller, bartender at Death & Co.
"Best cure for a hangover? Definitely another drink. If I had the ingredients at home, a Ramos Gin Fizz would be wonderful for me to make. It's a classic hangover drink: gin, lime, lemon, sugar, cream, egg whites and orange-flower water. It just coats your stomach. The way they used to serve it is, everyone at the bar took a turn shaking it, and you get it to that thick creamy thing."
Sunita Lofters, owner and bartender at Sunita Bar
"Other than just drinking a lot of water, I've got no secret cure. I don't have much tolerance, so when I drink it's about having small amounts of something that's really good."
Anthony Settecase, bartender at East Side Company Bar
"A shot and a beer—that'll usually do it. And maybe a couple slices of pizza."
David Rhoads, bartender at the Stanton Social
"Well, there are two kinds of hangovers, and I'm not really sure why one happens over the other. Sometimes I wake up craving sorbet, craving sugar. Pickles also do the trick. I've read that pickle juice has 17 times the amount of electrolytes as Gatorade. And booze always works, but then you're putting yourself back in the same situation, so I discourage that. And avoid grease. It seems like a good idea because McDonald's French fries are always wonderful, but again, you're trying to make yourself feel better."
Cecilia Taggart, bartender at Sean Og Tavern
"Easy one...drink again."
Naren Young, bartender at Bobo
"A Bloody Mary always works. That, and a big greasy breakfast."
Laura Goode, bartender at 1020
"Fried food always does it for me...and a little hair of the dog."
Lauren Musselman, bartender at Highbar
"Hot jasmine tea and Excedrin. Never fails."
Shawn Sugrue, bartender at STK
"The best way I know is to take a shot of amaro. Fernet Branca works well, too, or even Jaeger if you're desperate. Follow that by sipping a lot of ginger ale though a straw. I'm not going to lie, it makes you burp, but it works like a charm."
Jim Meehan, bartender at PDT
"Have another drink."
Artemio Vasquez, bartender at Yerba Buena
"Well, I can handle a lot of alcohol, but I'll usually drink Gatorade. Pedialyte is pretty good, too."
Sandee Wright, co-owner and bartender at the Whiskey Ward
"I had a customer who insisted on starting off with two martinis—vodka martinis—then switched to beer, then switched to a gin and juice. I can't even imagine what he'd feel like the next day. [Ed.: How would you patch him up?] I like to do real spicy V8, with lots of Tabasco sauce, then throw in some pepper. Pretty much numbs the whole inside of your mouth, so you forget the pain in your head."
