Nothing symbolizes the Southern way better than the mint julep, a classic, almost iconic beverage synonomous with the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century—although how you make it varies across the board and is a source of great debate.

Jimmy Russell, master distiller of Wild Turkey believes the only proper julep uses (naturally) Wild Turkey 101, as the higher proof produces a richer, deeper and fuller taste, making it a bigger, better flavored variation. With over 54 years in the industry (and 54 derbies under his belt) it’s fair to say he’s probably the most seasoned julep vet in the race and probably knows what he’s taking about by now.
