Jimmy Russell, master distiller of Wild Turkey believes the only proper julep uses (naturally) Wild Turkey 101, as the higher proof produces a richer, deeper and fuller taste, making it a bigger, better flavored variation. With over 54 years in the industry (and 54 derbies under his belt) it’s fair to say he’s probably the most seasoned julep vet in the race and probably knows what he’s taking about by now. As they say, practice makes perfect.
Russell’s refined concoction—The 54 Julep— is made with Wild Turkey 101, fresh mint sprigs, brown sugar and crushed ice and will be available for julep-craving New Yorkers at downtown joints Drop Off Service and d.b.a.
