There's no denying the laid-back appeal of this subterranean East Village beer bar, best described as an old-world rathskeller of sorts, complete with mounted deer heads, wooden barrels and plenty of handcrafted local, regional and imported beer. Also available are small plates and entrees which focus using farm-fresh, local, organic ingredients like cheese plates, charcuterie, tea sandwiches of organic crunchy peanut butter, and roasted free range hanger steak with potatoes, bitter greens and whole grain mustard double bock sauce. Farther into the bar, patrons will find a back room which often hosts live music, theater performances and private parties. An pleasant (and rare) bonus is the staff, who clearly want their patrons to feel comfortable—whether that means attempting to grab you an extra stool or explaining the diverse beer selection on hand.
