There's a distinct difference between a rock club and a rock-themed club. Retox obviously is the latter and it's not unlike the other spots on the block, although it does deserve points for occasionally booking live acts and serving martinis made with Jack. It loses points, however, for requiring folks (groups of single guys, mainly) to buy bottles before letting them in to enjoy these things. Expect officious doormen blocking entrance to anyone who doesn't "look the part" and a trended-out clientele no more rock and roll than the crew over at fellow West Chelsea megaclub Guest House. Although the decor is “divey,” it's calculated and the music isn't only rock, as there's always a DJ on hand spinning '80s, pop, house and hip-hop.
