Royal Oak is a relative newcomer to the McCarren scene. Its unassuming location off the main Bedford-Lorimer corridor and its quasi-Victorian gentleman’s club decor belie the fact that this gin joint likes to get jiggy. Even the large back room is barely big enough to accommodate the be-denim’d masses who pack in on weekends. Nightly drink specials and secluded booths make it an attractive destination for a weeknight date or happy hour or getting drunk alone. Not as sad as you would think.
