Campo | The Picnic Basket
Inspired by a watermelon-and-arugula salad on Campo's dinner menu, bar manager Jim Ciacci crafted this refreshing seasonal cocktail by pairing the soft yellow and red watermelon chunks from the dish with something a bit harder: Jack Daniels. “It’s sweeter and lighter than most whiskeys," he says. "People think it’s a real manly drink, but I’ll let you in on a secret: It’s not.” Neither is this drink, a frothy light pink concoction garnished by one yellow and one red watermelon chunk. They’re muddled together with cucumber for a crisp snap and strained to remove the pulp, but retain the body and texture. St. Germain, simple syrup and freshly squeezed lime juice enhance the sweetness of the watermelon, while the whiskey gives it a drip of street cred. (Price: $9)
Verdict: 3 stars
The tooty-fruity fragrance and appearance might turn off some guys, while the integrity of the Jack Daniels might turn off some gals. Still, the result is a successful balance that should appease anyone.
