James | Bloody Maria
June 8, 2009
Since opening last summer, Prospect Heights’ seasonal-American eatery has become a neighborhood fixture, drawing locals to its brownstone nook with a winning mix of towering burgers with herb fries, crusted diver scallops swimming in horseradish vinaigrette and spring-pea risotto. But James’ star shines brightest come Sunday, when the late-night din makes way for a bustling brunch. Tender steak and eggs and smoked pork with cheddar scones will heal all that ails you, especially when paired with a Bloody Maria. In lieu of vodka, this blood-hued beauty incorporates house-infused jalapeño tequila. ($9)
Verdict: 4 stars. It’s a study in contrasts: The thick, cooling bloody possesses a serious burn, and tequila’s vegetal notes enliven dulled taste buds. Zesty and refreshing.
