Van Gogh's Radio Lounge | DIY Bloody Mary
June 8, 2009
At this rec-room-like Greenpoint lair (named after the owner’s old band), bartenders are almost superfluous when it comes to bloodies—every weekend, Van Gogh’s rolls out its impressively cornucopia-esque DIY bloody station. After bartenders fill a plastic pint cup with a waterfall of vodka, you’re allowed to play mixologist with an armada of ingredients, including horseradish, pickled peppers, celery salt, imitation bacon bits and enough spicy sauces to set your mouth—and other body parts—aflame. Hello, Ass in Hell. I make my drink with tons of horseradish and hot sauce, just the way I like it. ($6)
Verdict: 3 stars. Though the idea of making a bloody while wildly hungover is about as unappealing as, well, another drink, the sheer breadth and scope of additions and topping make this a delicious value—provided you don’t screw it all up.
