The East Village is having a big O! Well, OK…it's not that big (about a dozen tables), and the "O" comes courtesy of Irishwoman and first-time restaurateur Mary O'Halloran. A straight-and-steady Irish bar, it offers a classy, low-key respite from the ever-increasing sloppy madness of Avenue A bar-dom. Natch, Mary's serving up traditional Irish pub grub like fish 'n' chips and shepherd's pie topped with cheddar-scallion mash; in a nod to Uncle Sam, she's also got crabcakes and Buffalo-style chicken tenders. And, hello—they're Irish: Beers on tap include Guinness, Harp and Smithwick's. Despite its all-Irish-all-the-time programming, the place looks nothing like an Irish pub—which, Mary tells us, was exactly what she was going for. To that end, she's prettied up the joint with a muted black-and-white bar area up front, and tufted banquettes and mod S-chairs at back. An electronic jukebox will happily accept your musical requests.
