Planet Rose
Petite with personality to spare, this East Village favorite differs from your typical karaoke joint in the way that there’s no literal stage, not a whole lot of “Sweet Caroline” renditions going on, and there are just as many patrons hanging out for the bar scene as there are for the karaoke. Tipsy hipsters pack the place, waiting to belt out songs pretty much wherever they choose, thanks to a conveniently unrestrictive cordless mic. The communal singing scene is more than lively, with fellow patrons and highly talented bartenders often getting involved. The interior—sufficiently described as feral-dive—is chock full of mismatched animal prints, like leopard rugs and zebra couches, set against bright red walls. The only downside? $2 a song. Something about a “performance fee.”
