Once a hot spot known for hosting magazine parties and secret Strokes shows, it's hard not to walk away with the impression that all it is now is just a grimy weekend space for twentysomethings to get wasted and hook up. As is the case with most hipster joints that have been able to last more than a year, veterans will grumble about how Lit used to be way cooler but, thankfully, even on its worst nights it's anything but Midtown. Weekdays welcome back the old crowd, with decent drink specials and the long-running glamrock party Rebel Rebel on Tuesdays. DJs spin eclectic rock every night on the main floor, while the basement is home to some of the city's best up-and-coming indie rock bands. Be warned though—it's caked with 5-years worth of dirt, grime and Ryan McGinley’s body fluids, so don’t wear light clothes or you’ll leave with a permanent reminder of your visit.
