Formerly serving as the semi-secret Ukrainian Labor Home, a social club for Ukrainian socialists, KGB has become something of a contemporary literary institution. Writers read here with pleasure (and without pay) to an adoring, intellectual crowd almost every Sunday evening (fiction), Monday evening (poetry), and most Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Even the decor is educational—authentic propaganda posters, photos and paintings from the fallen Soviet empire. Admission is free, drinks are cheap and the level of excellence is such that KGB has been named the city's foremost literary venue countless times.
