Looking for an early drink or an extremely late nightcap? This Greenpoint joint opens its doors at 10 a.m. every day except Sunday when it opens at noon and Monday when its closed (come on, the tattooed and bearded bartenders need a day to be hungover too!). 65 beers (15 on tap, 50 in bottles) are available behind the bar, as are a number of well-made seasonal, specialty and old-school cocktails (mint juleps! Martinis! Collins’!) While the jukebox in the backs is open to all, the bartenders will normally plug in their iPods and play a selection of standard tunes as well as more than a few they guarantee you’ve never heard before.
But at its heart, The Mark Bar is a neighborhood place. A rotating selection of art usually created by Greenpoint locals, hangs on the left-hand wall; the pool table in the back is used on Tuesday Nights when the local Mark Bar pool team chalks up their cues. Swing by any night after six and you’ll find free pizza and cold cuts sitting on the bar, but there’s food for purchase too (mac and cheese, shepherds pie, veggie lasagna) from Jaffe and Lambe. Board games are available behind the bar, while Big Buck Hunter, an old-school arcade console and—wait for it—a classic, Indiana Jones pinball machine sits in the corner. How’s that for fortune and glory?
