The ambience resembles any old neighborhood pub, but it’s the history
behind this place that sets it apart—and keeps the crowds coming.
Established in 1864, this weathered haunt is the city’s oldest operating bar. A favorite hangout of O. Henry, Healy’s (as it was known in his day) appeared in his short story “The Lost Blend,” and “The Gift of the Magi” was written in Booth 3 (a copy of the original is presently framed above it). Largely inspiring to Ludwig Bemelmans as well, “Madeline” was written at the bar. Out front, a plaque is posted from the Friends of Libraries USA commending the “nurturing environment” Pete’s has imparted upon writers throughout its long history.
