Tandem

Homey neighborhood bar Tandem is the much-doted-upon brainchild of sisters Cathy and Jane Virga, who made practically everything in the bar themselves, from sculpting the ceramic beer mugs and cutting and glazing the tabletop tiles, to brewing the ginger beer in the bar's Dark & Stormys and sourcing the vintage mahogany bar from an old social club in Queens. (An example of Girl Scout badges finding real-world relevance, to comfy, drunken effect.) A menu of bar bites, like grass-fed meatballs ($9) and a potato-and-kale tortilla ($4), accompanies the booze and beer menu, which advertises $8 specialty cocktails like the above-mentioned Dark & Stormy and the Bushwick Fizz (gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon and egg white) alongside local brew staples like Sixpoint Ale.
