9:30 p.m.

Before heading over to Vanderbilt Avenue, we grabbed a booth at Freddy’s, a much beloved neighborhood dive and saloon-central for anti-Ratner sentiment. Having spent many a late-night getting pie-eyed here, we were slightly let-down to find out that on typical early Friday night the place seemed deserted: only the lingering smell of cigarette smoke from the night before remained.

Determined to make this our first stop, we ordered a Magic Hat and a coke ($5.50) and began to take in the place’s cluttered kitschy interior design.
