Down & Derby

Studio B, 3/28/08
Roller skating! Disco balls! Metallic hot pants! We’re not describing the persistent revival of Broadway’s "Xanadu" but rather this weekend’s installment of Down & Derby—the ongoing party transforming local spaces into real live roller discos, à la "Boogie Nights."
We swung by to catch some of the camped-out action at Studio B and were impressed not only by the massive turnout (and all that 1970s apparel!), but also with partygoers' straight-up skating skills. Who knew so many New Yorkers could still rock out so gracefully on old-school roller skates? Even with the open Bass Ale bar from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., we were privy to the admirable sangfroid of the hipster. Nary a wallflower to be seen, there was enough figure-eighting, gliding and locomotions to make Olivia Newton-John (or, for more modern cinemagoers, Heather Graham) proud.
