STRAWBERRIES: Fraises Royale | Perle
February 2, 2009
Like Bonnie and Clyde or Barbie and Ken, strawberries and champagne is the ultimate (if clichéd) romantic pairing, and for good reason: while bubbly makes you all happy and tingly inside, the little red heart-shaped fruit is considered the symbol of Venus, owing to its plethora of tiny and fertility-symbolizing seeds.
Upscale French brasserie Perle puts a modern twist on the classic drink with a frothy balance of crème de fraise topped with chilled champagne. Despite its opaque pink color, the cocktail is light and dry and showcases the champagne beautifully, with the crème de fraise lending an acidic bite while drawing out the flavor of the strawberries floating on top. ($11)
Aphrodisiacal alternative: At perennially romantic bubbly-bar Flute, champagne cocktails are the main draw. Grab a secluded red velvet banquette and order up an Antoinette, which is as regal and indulgent as it sounds: Piper-Heidsieck champagne is spiked with Absolut Ruby Red vodka and triple sec, then sweetened with grapefruit juice, simple syrup and fresh strawberries. ($15)
