Carrie brings jazz musician Ray King, whom she had me while out with her then "friend" Big, to the opening of the massive pan-Asian Tao for their first date. As they maneuver their way around the 12,000-square-foot space, Carrie runs into Big and his supermodel date Shay (“the y is silent”). The night turns into a tense play for Carrie's attention as they all sit together (along with Samantha and her soon-to-be lesbian lover, Maria) at a table in the shadow of the restaurant’s iconic 16-foot Buddha.
“Is this the only restaurant opening in New York tonight?” jokes Carrie, and it seems the popular spot continues to draw a noisy, young crowd sipping specialty cocktails and Asian beer at the downstairs bar eight years later.
