Every week we take a look at bar openings and weekend parties, and this is the day we do it. First up: bar openings and almost-openings:
1. Windsor Terrace: The long-delayed booze venture from the folks behind Cake Shop is finally starting to rise to its feet—Double Windsor, as it shall be known, is tentatively slated to open in a couple weeks or so, at which point it'll be serving booze and teaching people how to tie their ties. Just kidding about that last part, but we did want to point out that we understand the name. Oof. Anyway, open late July. (210 Prospect Park West at 16th St., no phone yet)
2. Governors Island: The third sibling in the Water Taxi family was born this week, although it'll officially open to the public this Sunday, July 11. Water Taxi Beach on Governors Island is serving booze and mostly-under-$10 seaside grub—hot dogs, burgers, sausages, RC Cola pork spareribs, watermelon—as well as providing many, many square feet of sandy "beach" area for patrons to play and sunbathe and generally make that ferry ride worth the five minutes and zero dollars (it's free, and it leaves every hour on the hour from Manhattan, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). They've also got a great live-performance lineup scheduled for the rest of the summer—Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Hip Hop Karaoke—so rally your friends in advance for a weekend jaunt. Soft-open now, open officially on July 11. (1 Carder Rd. at Andes Rd, no phone)
3. Williamsburg: It happened—the much-ballyhooed Brooklyn Bowl opened. It opened right on up. Now you have another place to bowl! In Brooklyn! Open now. (61 Wythe Ave. between N. 11th and 12th Sts., 718-963-3369)
4. Red Hook: Oh, and you can drink at the new Fort Defiance, now, too! It has a liquor license! Congratulations, St. John Frizell! Starting July 17, it'll be serving that sweet delicious booze in extended, nightlife-appropriate hours as well. Open now. (365 Van Brunt St. at Dikeman St., 718-522-7996)
And now for your weekend party buzz...
