Cran-cocktails

When it comes time to celebrate the holidays and make merry, etc. etc., you could do it at home with your loved ones while everyone enjoys a glass of seltzer by the fire (that's a popular activity, right?), or you could do it the good old-fashioned way—at a bar. If the latter option is more your speed (and it's a slow and gentle speed—almost a full stop, really), go ahead enliven your drinking experience with a seasonal, holiday-influenced cocktail. And cranberries—sweet, acidic and long associated with the holiday (thanks to their autumn harvest)—make a far better mixing ingredient than turkey, yams or bread crumbs. To wit: You can drink them muddled, compoted, juiced, beer-ified or just bobbing happily on the surface of your drink (and remember, they're good for your urinary tract). For this we are thankful.

A few of our favorite spots for drinking your holiday dinner...

The Stanton Social

The Stanton Social

99 Stanton St. - New York
212-995-0099

Part bustling restaurant and part lounge, The Stanton Social also offers a particularly lovely Cranberry Flower cocktail, made with Hendricks’s aromatic gin, muddled cranberry compote, fresh lemon juice and lemon simple syrup. ($12)

Campo

Campo

2888 Broadway - New York
212-864-1143

Literally a "gathering place" in Italian slang, Campo styles itself after an Italian farmhouse and offers seasonal treats like their fresh, muddled Cranberry Margarita. And although it usually goes for $9, you can get a cranBERRY good deal (big LOL right there) during Campo's happy hour (from 3-7 p.m. and 11 p.m.-2 a.m.), when all their fancy cocktails are a meager $6.

Via Dei Mille

Via Dei Mille

357 West Broadway - New York
212-431-0080

The Soho Italian eatery balances upscale with rustic by offering new twists on old favorites, including the light 'n' lively Cran-Apple Mimosa, made with muddled fresh cranberries and green apples, prosecco and a touch of cranberry juice. ($14)

SideBar

SideBar

120 E 15th St - New York
212-677-2900

The Union Square bar with an appealing identity crisis (it's a sports bar! it's a dance club!) serves a powerful Cranberry-Pomegranate Sangria made with fresh cranberries and oranges, pomegranate and fruit juices, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, crushed ginger, pomegranate liqueur and red wine--served chilled. ($10)

Aquavit

pick Aquavit

65 E. 55th St. - New York
212-593-0287

The popular Midtown Scandinavian restaurant bottles its own brand of Aquavit (the liquor, buyable at $28) made from white cranberries, which also goes into three of its cocktails, including the White Cosmopolitan: white cranberry Aquavit, orange liqueur, white cranberry juice, lemon juice, simple syrup and a cranberry stick garnish. ($14)

Braeburn

Braeburn

117 Perry St. - New York

American fare meets French technique at this West Village bistro where beverage director Katherine Beto mixes an elegant Cranberry Margarita, using tequila, Cointreau and homemade cranberry juice, served up in a martini glass and garnished/chilled with frozen cranberries. ($10)

Mr. West

Mr. West

559 W. 22 St. - New York
212-414-8700

The prettily swanky lounge, bathed in Technicolor light from the ceiling's foxglove-shaped lights, serves an upscale Indian Summer cocktail that hearkens back to warmer days, with muddled fresh cranberries and orange wedges, apple brandy, sweet vermouth, benedictine, OJ, cherry liqueur and ginger ale, with cranberry and orange-wheel garnishes. ($18)

Employees Only

pick Employees Only

510 Hudson St. - New York
212-242-3021

A true cocktail lounge, the speakeasy-style Employees Only serves a tasty Ginger Smash, made from freshly muddled ginger and cranberries shaken with pear-infused gin and German apple cordial, served over ice. ($14)

Delicatessen

Delicatessen

54 Prince St. - New York
212-226-0211

Although Delicatessen, brought to you by the folks behind Cafeteria, hasn't had the smoothest of first few months (robberies, neighborhood ire, chef drama, etc.), they do serve a particularly inspired Cranberry Sauced cocktail, made with gin, lime juice, cranberry sauce (sauce--not juice!), simple syrup and a vanilla-sugar rim. ($12)

Boat

pick Boat

175 Smith St. - Brooklyn
718-254-0607

And for our personal favorite, it's the lowbrow but highly satisfying Thanksgiving Dinner: Wild Turkey bourbon (pictured above), cranberry juice and vodka (potatoes!). Just make sure you ask for it very specifically. ($6)
