Repeal Day in NYC

Seventy-five years ago, on Dec. 5th, 1933, the government ratified the 21st Amendment, which repealed Prohibition. Except for the grim, gray old temperance ladies, America rejoiced. No more brain-eroding bathtub gin! No more lethal doses of alcoholic "medicine"!

So here we are, three-quarters of a century later, celebrating this terrific (if mostly pretend) holiday. Good job, marketing! But seriously, where would we be without legal alcohol? We're not actually sure—everyone might be smarter, faster and thinner—but at the very least you wouldn't be reading this page on this section of this website.

Thus, when the clock strikes 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5th, put on your classiest '30s-era duds (think flapper for women, dapper and fedora-hatted for men) and take a long, hard drink while toasting the men and women who worked hard to make your drink possible. And if you'd rather not do that in the privacy of your own home, we've compiled a handy list of speakeasy-esque NYC bars and drinking venues where you can get your Repeal on.

Employees Only

pick Employees Only

510 Hudson St. - New York
212-242-3021

MONDAY: A true speakeasy-style restaurant and bar, Employees Only will be holding a big and rowdy pre-Repeal Monday party, on Dec. 1, filled with industry insiders dressed to the nines. Maybe even to the tens.

Forge

Forge

134 Reade St. - New York
212-941-9401

THURSDAY & FRIDAY: The New American eatery in Tribeca has a vintage feel, an impressive culinary pedigree and a nice Repeal deal on Thursday and Friday: 25 cent French 75 cocktails (gin, champagne, lemon juice and sugar) at the bar, and a $75 prix fixe dinner to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the prohibition of Prohibition.

Frankie & Johnnies Steakhouse

269 W. 45th St. - New York
212-997-9494

FRIDAY: One of New York City's time-honored steakhouses, Frankies & Johnnies is also one of the city's three remaining original Prohibition-era speakeasies. (Once upon a time you knocked on an unmarked door and whispered "Frankie," and when someone whispered "Johnnie" back, you'd be allowed in to booze it up.) But on Friday morning, at 11 a.m., the great-grandson of the man who governed NYC during Prohibition (Alfred Smith) will be holding a news conference to announce an upcoming 500-person gala to, once more, celebrate the end of Prohibition.

'21' Club

'21' Club

21 W. 52nd St. - New York
212-582-7200

FRIDAY: The historic Prohibition-era spot crackles with Capote-esque flair in Midtown, and tonight the organization Choose Responsibility throws an invite-only Repeal Day party, from 6-8 p.m., reminding us that just because 75 years ago they made alcohol legal again doesn't mean that we have to turn ourselves into staggering and unattractive fools. Remember that!

pick Back Room

102 Norfolk St. - New York
212-228-5098

FRIDAY: Even cynical New Yorkers feel a little cooler slipping through the dark alley leading to this modern incarnation of a speakeasy, where tonight the Distilled Spirits Company (DISCUS) is celebrating hard (and invite only). Lounge on a velvet sofa while sipping beers from paper bags or dirty martinis served, as always, in sly porcelain tea cups. Bonus for tonight: Actual bathtub gin!

The Box

189 Chrystie St. - New York
212-982-9301

FRIDAY: The LES debauchery den extraordinaire seems like a fitting place to throw a Repeal Day party, no? Expect DJs, magicians, burlesque, aerial performance and a slew of scintillating surprises under the Box's jewel-encrusted chandeliers.

Prohibition

503 Columbus Ave - New York
212-579-3100

FRIDAY: Repeal Day is big at this appropriately named UWS bar, where every year they dress up in '30s era costumes, hire a live band and mix up classic drinks (Old Fashioneds, daiquiris, Champagne-based cocktails) at reduced prices.

pick Pegu Club

77 W. Houston St. - New York
212-473-7348

FRIDAY: Less of a party, more of a perpetual celebration of old-school drinking ideals. As always, expect classy drinks and classy digs, and do your best to look sharp. And if you "pour one out" for the fine folks of the 1930s, do it carefully over a sink in the bathroom. But that'd be wasteful, wouldn't it?

Flatiron Lounge

pick Flatiron Lounge

27 W. 19th St. - New York
212-727-7741

FRIDAY: Call Julie Reiner one of the (if not THE) mastermind behind the speakeasy trend that took NYC by storm this year and last. She arguably started it all off with the jazzy, relaxed and cocktail-centric Flatiron Lounge, an ideal spot to feel thankful no one has to drink cough syrup or rubbing alcohol anymore. Drink specials all evening!

Char No. 4

Char No. 4

196 Smith St. - Brooklyn
718-643-2106

FRIDAY: The whiskey haven on Smith Street offers half-price whiskeys (on select brands) and a Repeal Day Special: one 16-ounce beer, a one-ounce tasting of rye and a chopped-pork sandwich--all for $17. Just from 5-7 p.m., so make it a very happy hour.

The JakeWalk

The JakeWalk

282 Smith St. - Brooklyn
347-599-0294

FRIDAY: The wine and cheese bar got its name from a Prohibition-era affliction that gave you a stumbly walk from drinking too much terrible alcohol, and tonight (and tonight ONLY) they're offering two special, whiskey-based cocktails to celebrate: The Jake Walk and The Jake Leg.

Clover Club

Clover Club

210 Smith St. - Brooklyn
718-855-7939

FRIDAY: ... Or drop by Reiner's other NYC homage to drinks of yore, the relative newcomer Clover Club, where the upstanding bartenders swizzle, fizz, splash and hand crack old-timey drinks to thirsty Brooklynites. Drink specials all evening, with an emphasis on Pisco Punch and Sherry Cobblers.

LeNell's

pick LeNell's

416 Van Brunt St. - Brooklyn
877-NO-SNOBS

FRIDAY: If you'd rather not go out to a bar, you can throw a "Hooray, Prohibition's over!" party at your own apartment anytime this weekend after stocking up at the legendary Red Hook liquor store, where you'll enjoy special savings on booze from noon to midnight. Hooray, Prohibition's over! And it has been for so long!
