Australia Day at The Sunburnt Cow
Yesterday we learned that nothing will keep Australians from the bar on Australia Day, not freezing rain, slushy streets or a late night snow storm. Drinking is practically a national pastime in the land of Oz. We made the rounds of some of our favorite Down Under spots, starting off on a high (brow) note with a chef Shaun Hergatt at SHO. He made us some of Australia's favorite snacks, even schooling us in the proper technique for making a Vegemite sandwich.
Afterwards we led our own bar crawl, hitting the The Sunburnt Cow, Bondi Road and Eight Mile Creek. We learned that real Australians like Coopers over Fosters. It's like Sam Adams vs. Budweiser. We sampled Lamingtons (sponge cakes with jam and coconut) and meat pies, while the hungrier among us opted for burgers Aussie style (which are topped with a fried egg and a slice of beet). Next year on Bondi Beach in Sydney!
