Black Mountain Wine House
- Neighborhood: Carroll Gardens

- Price range: $$ ($9-$15)
Sidling up to the Gowanus border, Black Mountain Wine House is so refreshingly off the beaten path that burned-out locals have flocked to it in droves. In warmer months, the outdoor patio, with its wooden, Adirondack-style furniture, makes for a convivial gathering spot. But for those long and lean winter months, our money is on the inviting indoor space, complete with fireplace. Manager Shane Smith controls the wine selection, and does a bang-up job at it. A glass of Shane's Pick will set you back only about $6.50, and the other selections are varied and unique (try the Domaine Spiropoulos Moschofilero). The kitchen supplies a burgeoning menu of salads, crostini and daily specials (plus a $16 Swiss fondue night on Tuesdays). All affordable, and all delicious. We hesitate even writing about this place, for fear of overcrowding. But the public has a right to know.
