Dali: Painting and Film
"Apparatus and Hand," Salvador Dali, 1927 (Credit: Copyright: 2008 Salvador Dali)
There is no better known Surrealist painter than Salvador Dali, (Spanish 1904-1989) whose larger than life persona rivaled that of his art. Now through September 15th, The Museum of Modern Art presents “Dali: Painting and Film,” the first exhibition to focus on the seminal relationship between the artist’s paintings and films, and the profound influence the cinema had on his work. In addition to being a celebrated painter, Dali was a screenwriter, filmmaker and art director. The exhibition comprises a gallery presentation of more than 130 paintings, scenarios, sketches and films in the Tisch Gallery, and a six-part program of more than 50 films in the Titus Theaters.

Dali was part of the first generation of artists to be influenced by film and throughout his career you can see his passion for the medium in both technique and style. Collaborations between Dali and famous filmmakers Alfred Hitchcock, Luis Bunuel, Fritz Lang and Walt Disney and more are visible on large screens next to his paintings showcasing the synergy of mediums. One of Dali’s best known cinematic set pieces is the famous dream sequence in Hitchcock’s thriller “Spellbound" starring Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergmans. On view are four grisaille paintings and one study of the five scenes of the movie sequence, which is shown in a continuous loop.
