The work of celebrated British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner, better known as J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) has not been part of a major retrospective in the U.S. for more than 40 years. The good news for fans of this influential artist, whose career spanned six decades, is a brand new exhibit simply called “J. M.W. Turner,” on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art now through September 21.

Turner’s range was broad, encompassing everything from seascapes and topographical views to historical subjects and creations of his own vivid imagination. His fascination with light and color is evident throughout his work in all mediums, and his distinct innovations in watercolor influenced artists both in Europe and the U. S. More than 140 paintings and watercolors are on view at the Met, half of which are on loan from Tate Britain.

Turner was born in London and showed proficiency in drawing at an early age. When he was only fourteen he enrolled in London’s Royal Academy of Arts Schools and became the youngest artist elected to full Academician. The exhibition features many of his works from the Academy, detailed water color studies and finished works, plus his famous “Snow Storm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps” (1812).
