“People think it’s for white, middle-age political woo-woos,” says Carrellas, who leads tantric workshops for New York’s sexually curious urbanites—women and men in their 20s through 40s of varying sexual orientations. Even for naysayers who go "tantra"—engaging in deep-breathing techniques and “heart-centered connections” that have little to do with private parts—Carrellas practically guarantees fuller, better orgasms.
Curiosity piqued? That’s not all that’s brewing underground. From tantra to sex-ed salons to basic, orgasm-centered classes and tutoring, New York is oozing with ways to help you reach your peak.
It's not about "getting off"
Thanks to ladies like Carrellas, tantric sex—the holistic mind-body approach to hour-long orgasms once associated with New-Age retreats—isn’t just for lotus-eating yogis. The practice is rooted in the ancient Eastern tradition of “tantra,” the connection of sexual, physical and spiritual to achieve a state of bliss that transcends a simple romp in the sheets. What’s even better: You don’t need a weekend-long retreat in a Brazilian rainforest to experience it.
“The root of the word tantra in sanskrit means 'to weave' or to 'expand consciousness awareness.' When a lot of people are having sex, they’re generally very goal-oriented,” says Isis Phoenix, Naked Yoga NYC founder and self-described “sensual shaman” whose signature in-the-buff classes are (partially) rooted in tantra. “What tantra will do is not look at ‘the next moment.’ It’s about being very present in this moment and weaving in all of the senses—sight, sound, taste, smell—and then using all the ‘chakras,' the energy centers in the body.’"
But can a goal-oriented town like New York slow down enough to experience it? As our research shows, if you have a couple of hours, it's time well spent...no matter what your current dating status is.
