Free Comic Book Day

Talk about industry cooperation! Comic book stores nationwide unite for Free Comic Book Day on May 2, giving away free titles to anyone who comes in the door.

The free titles are not leftovers. Whether you're a fanboy or a comics newbie, there's something for everyone here, including Brian Michael Bendis's new take on the "Avengers," a "Cars" spin-off, "Green Lantern: Blackest Night," a reprint of the classic first issue of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and, of course, "Wolverine."

Not surprisingly, New York, the cultural capital of the country, is the Mecca of comic book stores. There are more than 40 comic shops in the five boroughs; here are a few you should check out on Saturday. Each store has its own specials and unique twists on the day, so hit more than one! And please go here for more information on events and available titles.

Midtown Comics

200 W. 40th St. - New York
212-302-8192

Over two dozen titles will be available, including comics from all the biggies, including Archie, Dark Horse, DC, Dynamite, Image, IDW, Marvel, Virgin and more. Be sure to also check out the location on 45th and Lexington.

Rocketship

208 Smith St. - New York
718-797-1348

One of Brooklyn's few comic book stores, this Smith St. upstart features a plethora of indie titles. In other words, it's not quite for the Wolverine masses (although they're welcome).

Forbidden Planet

840 Broadway - New York
212-473-1576

Manga, anime, toys and comics on two levels near Union Square. Also a big-time tourist stop and the best place to overhear fanboy conversation

St. Marks Comics

11 St. Mark's Place - New York
212-598-9439

It's a small and very cramped space, so be warned: free comics most likely will form lines that are out the door. But, on top of the free titles, St. Marks is offering up weekend-long sales

Jim Hanley's Universe

4 West 33rd Street - New York
212-268-7088

Vito Delsante and Rachel Freire will be signing copies of their Free Comic Book Day offering, FCHS, from noon til 9:00 p.m. Also signing: Joe Staton, Mike Dawson.

Chameleon Comics & Cards

3 Maiden Ln - New York
212-732-8525

The Financial District is not what first comes to mind when you think comic book stores, but lo and behold!

Cosmic Comics

10 E 23rd St - New York
212-460-5322

Nab eight free comics PLUS a free copy of "Battlestar Galactica #1" (the original Marvel version)...if you're one of the first 50 customers . Also, everything in the store will be 30 percent off.
