Talk about industry cooperation! Comic book stores nationwide unite for Free Comic Book Day on May 3, giving away free titles to anyone who comes in the door.

The free titles are not leftovers. Whether you're a fanboy or a comics newbie, there's something for everyone here, including the first issue of "All-Star Superman” (comics scribe Grant Morrison's re-imagining of the classic title...and the best pure superhero comic of the last decade)  to indie fave "Hellboy" to all-ages books like "Tiny Titans" and "Little Archie." The goal here is to get more people, of all interests, shapes and sizes, to come to the world of comic books. (The lack of "Iron Man" titles is, admittedly, a bit of a shocker.)

Not surprisingly, New York, the cultural capital of the country, is the Mecca of comic book stores. There are more than 40 comic shops in the five boroughs; here are a few you should check out on Saturday. Each store has its own specials and unique twists on the day, so hit more than one!

Midtown Comics

200 W. 40th St., New York
212-302-8192

Over two dozen titles will be available, including comics from all the biggies, including Archie, Dark Horse, DC, Dynamite, Image, IDW, Marvel, Virgin and more

Rocketship

208 Smith St., New York
718-797-1348

On top of giving away tons of free comics, Brooklyn's best comic shop will also have two signings: starting at 11:30, Matt Loux, creator of the new adventure book "Saltwater Taffy," and from 1:30 to 4:00, Fred Van Lente, a writer of "Iron Man," "Power Pack" and "Fantastic Four"

Forbidden Planet

840 Broadway, New York
212-473-1576

Manga, anime, toys and comics on two levels near Union Square. Also a big-time tourist stop and the best place to overhear fanboy conversation

St. Marks Comics

11 St. Mark's Place, New York
212-598-9439

It's a small and very cramped space, so be warned: free comics most likely will form lines that are out the door. But, on top of the free titles, St. Marks is offering up weekend-long sales

Jim Hanley's Universe

4 West 33rd Street, New York
212-268-7088

Special guest writer Dan Slott ("Avengers: The Initiative," "She-Hulk") will be in the midtown store starting at noon.

Chameleon Comics & Cards

3 Maiden Ln, New York
212-732-8525

The Financial District is not what first comes to mind when you think comic book stores, but low and behold!

Cosmic Comics

10 E 23rd St, New York
212-460-5322

Nab eight free comics PLUS a free copy of "Indiana Jones #1" by comics legend John Byrne...if you're one of the first 50 customers . Also, everything in the store will be 30 percent off.
