July: From franks (Nathan's!) to francs (Bastille Day!)
If Macy's decides to stage a redux of last year's Fourth of July fireworks, expect to trek to the banks of the Hudson River for primo viewing spots. We, on the other hand, will be trekking in the other direction—to Coney Island—to watch haplessly self-destructive gluttons blow up their stomachs at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest (July 4). (Last year's champ: 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes!). Speaking of gluttony, satiate your inner carnivore at Meatopia (TBD).
Hankering for something a bit more genteel? Trade franks for francs at Smith Street's Bastille Day celebration (TBD), featuring the most heated (and Muscadet-fueled) lawn bowling tourney (sorry, petanque), as well as—natch—loads of berets and Lillets.
Other highlights: Indie movie fans converge at the Asian American International Film Festival (TBD), while revelers put on their dancing shoes at Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing (TBD). Also, enjoy our city pools, boats and beaches.
