2011 Jazz Age Lawn Party
It seems like you all finally started listening when we told you that the bi-annual Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island was the place to be. This weekend thousands (as opposed to hundreds in years past) turned up in their best boaters and flapper dresses—although it must be said that more than a few of you didn't get the memo that this was a costume party. Jeans and flip flops had no place in the Jazz Age, folks! Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra charmed guests with tunes of a bygone era and special guests Gelber & Manning stepped in for a few sets as well. Michael Cumella brought his phonographs to DJ, bringing new meaning to the idea of "two turntables and a microphone." And no outing with the vintage set would be complete without some tap-tap-tapping from the Minsky Sisters, or dance lessons from Roddy Caravella!
For the first time in ages it was easy to get a drink at the lawn party. St-Germain set up six bars this time out with some talented mixologists pouring cocktails. We spied Brian Miller (Lani Kai), Eryn Reece (Mayahuel), Lynnette Marrero (LUPEC) and Philip Pepperdine (Liquid Masons) stirring up St-Germain cocktails and sangria.
Saturday was dry and fair for the pie contest. That was pie making, not pie eating. Lee Chappell, one of NYC's beloved party mavens, won a blue ribbon for his strawberry rhubarb pie with a cream cheese crust. Sunday saw some severe showers to rain on the bathing beauty contest. Glad we dropped in on Saturday!
