Coney Island Brewing Company Grand Opening
We'll take any excuse to head out to Coney Island and grab a Nathan's Famous 'dog and ride the Cyclone, so when we heard that the Coney Island Brewing Company was hosting a grand opening at their new digs right on Surf Avenue, we hopped on the train to Stillwell Avenue. The Coney Island Arts Center has given Jeremy Cowan and his band of intrepid brewers—whose company motto seems to be "one liter at a time"—space alongside the Coney Island Freakshow rent free, in exchange for royalties on every bottle sold. And those are some mighty tasty bottles of beer they are producing in their tiny storefront.
The "Albino Python" we've seen around town in a few bars, and it's a notable brew for it's lemony notes and spicy finish. We tried the hoppy "Sword Swallower" lager, and the "Mermaid" pilsner, which were all fine beers. The real stunner though was the heady "Blockhead" aged in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels which had distinct bourbon caramel flavors, totally smooth sipping without any of the cloying sweetness that beers with a similar profile can demonstrate.
Afterwards a ride on Deno's Wonder Wheel was in order, too bad we couldn't bring our beers.
