Bringing the lace-ruffled and powdered-wig scene to a gothic uptown castle
Dances of Vice's Secret Garden Spring Ball brought the lace-ruffled and powdered-wig scene to Morningside Heights last night. As guests in hoop skirts and feathered hats sauntered up sleepy Claremont Avenue, just north of the Columbia University campus, bemused passersby asked, "How do you hear about such interesting parties?" Indeed!
A throwback to earlier DOV parties held at unusual or obscure spaces that were adventures in themselves, last night's gala event was hosted in what passes for a castle in a castle-less Manhattan: Morningside Castle, the recently re-dubbed neo-medieval event space at Union Theological Seminary. Guests had free reign at a Baroque banquet upstairs, a Victorian promenade in the courtyard gardens and a flapper-tastic dancefloor downstairs, spaces in which the anachronistic partygoers could swish their long skirts and shake their tail-feathers (if they brought them). Elegant and eccentric!
