Scenes from an all-night, black-lit party inside a Times Square space station
The 6th Annual Black and Light Ball, co-presented by Disorient and Kostume Kult at the kiddie playground restaurant Mars 2112, was officially the biggest pre-Burning Man event ever in New York City, with over 1,000 tickets sold, according to Kostume Kult honcho, the aptly named neon Egyptian, Costume Jim. This year, with their very own Times Square space station in which to play, guests were encouraged to dress space-y and wander the tunnels and dancefloors under the black light.
Space cowboys, aliens, space pirates, astronauts, martians and astronaut martians gathered for the all night event -- "It's not a rave, it's an art party!" insisted Costume Jim. Mars 2112 was made for these kinds of parties, and we're just now wondering why we haven't seen more of them. Lots of theme park-ish nooks and crannies for grown-ups in dayglo costumes to explore and dance in. Let the kids have their fun in the daytime, and let the adults take over at night, we're down. --Gabi Porter
