House of Yes Christmas Spectacular
The idea of a variety show or a holiday pageant is far too often code for "a bunch of really mediocre amateur performances strung together because everyone was available that night," but the House of Yes is not that. Last night co-directors Kae Burke and Anya Sapozhnikova flipped that stereotype on its head so hard, we think we might have sustained minor head injuries at their Christmas Spectacular. Dazed audience member after dazed audience member stumbled out of the makeshift theater in East Williamsburg all saying the same thing, "We were not prepared for that!"
The show is clever and funny and irreverent and completely politically incorrect and raunchy (kiddies stay at home, let mommy and daddy go to the show alone), it's the antidote for saccharine holiday entertainment. You'll sing happy birthday to Jesus and then do the macarena, you'll watch a Jewish/Palestinian Christmas stand off moderated by Santa, you'll enjoy a totally minimalist and disarmingly funny Kali Santa put a hipster yoga spin on the holiday, you'll celebrate the nativity in Mexico with Maria and Jose and what we think might have been a sea creature, raunchy reindeer, aerialists, cabaret, acrobats, contortionists and funny people and so much more our eyes melted right out of our heads.
Above all you will be confused and completely delighted, if not a little bit offended. It is with regret that we tell you there is only one more night to catch them. Run, don't walk. Watch this space, these kids are headed for comedy greatness. And many thanks to the company for inviting us to visit with them behind the scenes before the show. --Gabi Porter
