SantaCon 2010
"SantaCon is a non-denominational, non-commercial, non-political and non-sensical Santa Claus convention that occurs once a year for absolutely no reason." Thus states the official NYC SantaCon Web site, and we've seen the SantaCon nonsense get bigger and bigger with each year.
This year there were 11 starting points for Santas to congregate with their holiday snacks and their hip flasks, with everyone coming together in Central Park Saturday afternoon. But with no bars in the park (or delis selling beer), the crowd quickly converged on downtown subway platforms, chanting, "Santa needs a beer! Santa needs a beer!" and headed to the West Village where the unofficial-official Santa pub crawl got started in earnes.
Seemingly thousands of tipsy Santas staggered from bar to bar well into the wee hours, spreading holiday cheer and goodwill to all. Our favorite part is always the mystified non-Santas trying to figure out what's going on. It really is the most wonderful time of the year!
