Shanghai Mermaid
Shanghai Mermaid rang in the Lunar New Year in secret speakeasy style at the Red Lotus Room this past weekend, bringing back the golden nightclub age of the '20s and '30s in Asia. It was red-hot... and gold. The placed was dolled up like an opium den and the lychee martinis were flowing, as old-timey bands—Blue Vipers of Brooklyn and Jessy Carolina & the Hot Mess—played down-home, New Orleans–style jazz to warm up the dance floor.
Aerialist Seanna Sharpe quite literally swung from the rafters, and at midnight two diminutive dragons took over the stage. Burlesque artist Ms. Tickle reminded everyone that this is the year of the Rabbit, finishing her act in a cottontail and long ears. We could tell you when the next Shanghai Mermaid is, but then we'd have to kill you. Shhhhhh. What's the password?
