More soup for you! A showdown for the top prize in the stock-pot sweeps.
It was a souped-up Saturday at Jimmy's No. 43 in the East Village, which played host to a slew of cooks competing for brothy victory while raising a cool grand for Harbor Hope and the Fresh Air Fund. The 16 chefs, amateurs and pros alike, came bearing crock pots and hot plates, ladling out everything from chicken chili to Dagobah swamp soup ("Star Wars" nerd alert!).
Judges Cathy Erway, author of "The Art of Eating In"; Gabrielle Langholz, editor of Edible Brooklyn and Manhattan; Jake Schiffman of the Food Network; and food writer Sherri Brooks Vinton slurped their way through the contenders, while owner Jimmy Carbone worked the crowd and the beer taps.
In the end, top honors went to first-time competitor Sam Mason's (not of Tailor) green chili, local-food advocate and amateur cook Karol Lu's roasted parsnip and sweet potato puree, and a tie between home cook Catherine Harvey's goat and dumpling soup and co-host Ted Smith's deconstructed fish taco soup. The winners walked off with knives, cookware and cookbooks, and a big ol' bowl of glory. —Jamie Feldmar
