Clocking the best cluckers at this hearty cook-off
It was a sloppy good time on Sunday at Red Star bar in Greenpoint, where 15 of Brooklyn's finest hot-wing joints were on hand to show off their birds at an event co-sponsored by Brooklyn Based and 3V PR firm. Hundreds of chicken-hungry Brooklynites flooded the bar, where Atomic Wings, Spike Hill, Teddy's and more doled out free wings and wet naps to the hot-sauce stained masses. Nearby Brooklyn Brewery provided six brews to wash down all the saucy goodness.
A judging panel headed by Nick D'Arienzo of the Brooklyn Star-Queens Ledger, Gersh Kuntzman of The Brooklyn Paper, and Annaliese Griffin of Brooklyn Based judged the competitors in categories like "sizeable/meatiness" and "succulence/ texture." Many participants stuck closely to the classic Frank's hot sauce/butter combo, though a few did branch out with jerk chicken or ginger-cayenne combos. "Brooklyn has not reinvented the Buffalo wing, though a classic wing can be transcendent," noted Kuntzman.
Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz was on hand to announce the winner, Superwings of Crown Heights, who triumphantly received a chicken-adorned trophy. But there were no hard feelings: Everyone's a winner when they leave a bar reeking of blue cheese with fingers stained orange. —Jamie Feldmar
