Tutus and twirls at a dress-up send-up of the Oscar-winning flick
Every swan has her day, and Saturday night's The Black Swan Experience, held at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema, was the day for wannabe swans to both dress up like Natalie Portman’s loony ballerina and to send her up in style. It was one of four interactive "Black Swan" screenings around the country mounted by the Karpel Group, which hoped to inject a "Rocky Horror Picture Show" irreverence while celebrating a film that recently won Portman an Oscar (not to mention spur controversy about her dancing double).
Everyone got a bag with a list of actions and elaborate props—“take the nail file in the manicure kit we gave you and make Psycho-esque sounds!”—but the audience had no problem screaming their own lines at the screen. About halfway through the screening, which was hosted by drag-queen duo Manila Luzon and Shequida, the crowd died down, remembering that "Black Swan" is actually really creepy. But the by the end of the night, revelers both costumed and un-costumed tutu'd and twirled their way through a party worth a standing ovation. —Desiree Browne
