Swanky socialites party the night away Gatsby-style
With the Frick's Fifth Avenue facade under renovation, this year's garden party opened up the "backyard" to guests, but when your name is Frick the backyard features a lush lily pond filled with elegant goldfish surrounded by ivy-covered walls. Guests holding tall, cool Collins glasses filled with thyme lemonade (spiked with a little kick) circled the lily pond and joked about who was going to be the first to fall in as they swayed to the jazz quartet on the lawn. The private collection (current exhibits include Bellini's St.Francis in the Desert and the Turkish Tastes at the Court of Marie-Antoinette) was open for partygoers to wander at their leisure, but as a few small groups of guests gathered in the fountain-filled atrium and in the galleries, the real action was out back.
In socialite fashion trends, we are happy to report that "the hat" is back, although perhaps it was never really out. The Kentucky Derby and Royal Weddings are no longer the mainstage for wide-brimmed and whimsical headware confections, as the ladies last night brought their hats home from the Hamptons and proved that nothing accessorizes the perfect hat better than a gentleman in a bow-tie or a well-cut seersucker suit.
