US Air Guitar New York Regionals
Did you ever wonder what happened to all those wonderfully nerdy class clowns from high school? The really clever goofy ones who kept us all laughing in third period geometry when we shouldn't have been? I found them. Many of them "grew up" and became air guitarists. Last night at Bowery Ballroom, Airistotle was crowned New York's reigning air guitar champion, beating out other local favorites in the final six: Shreddy Mercury, G Tso Money, Math Romancer, the stoic Windhammer and newbie E Rock Money (no relation to G Tso). The evening was hosted by air guitar celebrity Bjorn Turoque, with judging from funny lady Kristen Schaal, A&R man Leigh Lust and 2008 Air Guitar World Champion, Hot Lixx Hulahan and a "very special" half-time performance from William Ocean and the reigning air guitar champ from Brazil. Airistotle goes on to represent our fair city later this summer in the Nationals in Chicago.
Be warned this is not a hobby for those not willing to commit (or be committed) to wearing (and making) ridiculous outfits and hours and hours of practicing devil horns and phantom guitar riffs in the mirror. Air guitar is like American Idol with alcohol, there is figure-skating scoring and all the judges are Simon Cowell with more beer in him. People get drunk and start throwing their drinks at the stage if they don't like your "airness," or at the judges if they don't like the scores. If this looks like your scene, be sure to head to Brooklyn Bowl tonight for the Brooklyn Regionals, but be sure to wear rainproof clothing.
