Tchaikovsky came direct from Russia to conduct his own work on opening night in 1891, the hall which was almost entirely funded by Andrew Carnegie, was restored in the 1980s and a subsequent mid-1990s renovation removed concrete from beneath the stage's wooden floor, improving the acoustics further, today it consists of the Isaac Stern Auditorium, Joan and Sanford I. Weill Recital Hall and the Judy and Arthur Zankel Hall; Rose Museum displays mementos from the hall's history such as Benny Goodman's clarinet and Toscanini's baton; various concert series, children's events, guided tours.
