RESTAURANTS: Coldstone, in an affront to God, attempts to turn ice cream into pudding.

We found this story floating around Digg today, about Coldstone's newest unholy concoction: an ice cream that melts into pudding. No surprise, it's a collaboration between the ice creamery and JELL-O. But is it good science? We sent our new intern, Amanda Woytus, over to a Coldstone in Times Square to give it a try. On her first day! We have the BEST internships.

Her story, her words:

Coldstone Creamery just released a new form of ice cream that claims to turn into JELL-O pudding when it melts, rather than a sloppy puddle of sugar like regular ice cream. Curious, I visited the Coldstone in Times Square to give the "Chocolate-y Goodness" flavor of the new ice cream a try. 

At first, the ice cream was the perfect velvety blend of rich milk chocolate and peanut butter. While the flavor was spot-on, I soon found the texture to be troubling. Within a few bites, the hybrid ice cream began to soften and turned into a glue-like mixture, unlike either JELL-O or ice cream. With the consistency of a very thick frozen yogurt or gelato, the ice cream coated the inside of my mouth instead of melting comfortably. About an hour after purchase, the ice cream had turned into a mousse-like mixture, but was still not as firm as JELL-O.

Also, don't think that since this product claims not to melt that it will be less messy than ice cream. It was fortunate that I grabbed a few napkins while heading out of Coldstone, because while walking, the Chocolate-y Goodness found its way down the side of the cup, onto my hands, and even dripped onto my pants.

While Coldstone is usually a safe bet for my ice cream needs, I think next time I'll save the $6 for something not endorsed by JELL-O and found in the frozen section of my local grocery store.
