Young adult? Why not? That's apparently what Kate Winslet said when the Oscar winner for 2008's The Reader was offered the villainous role of Jeanine Matthews in the sci-fi adventure Divergent, based on the best-selling young-adult novel by Veronica Roth.

Directed by Neil Burger (Limitless, The Illusionist), Divergent is based on the first of a series of books that have been compared to The Hunger Games and imagines a future where the populace is divided by distinct factions.

On the lowest rung are the Divergents, factionless misfits who are secretly targeted for destruction. When Divergent Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley of The Descendants) learns of the plot, she tries to find out why she and others like her are deemed so dangerous.

Others in the cast include Jai Courtney, Theo James, Zoe Kravitz and Maggie Q. The film is due out next year.
