In 19th-century Spain, a group of nuns gets a surprise when a baby girl is abandoned at their convent. The sisters rise to the occasion and decide to raise the infant, who is given the name Teresa (Maribel Verdú) . As the orphaned girl grows older, she starts to develop romantic longings that are fulfilled when she meets Pablo (Carmelo Gomez) . Their union forces Teresa to leave the women who cared for her, women who never thought they'd have to face the joys -- and pain -- of motherhood.
