“The Joker” and “The Return of the Joker” (1940)
[Published in "Batman" #1]
The Setup: In his very first appearance, the Joker uses a special chemical venom to stage seemingly impossible murders that leave his victims smiling while he makes off with their gems. Batman and Robin struggle to outwit the villain, who manages to escape prison long enough to nearly unmask Batman before falling victim to one of his own poisons.
The Punch Line: The character appeared nearly completely formed—from his ghastly visage and purple suit to his penchant for staging violent and elaborate murders. Inspired by both the traditional playing card image and the 1928 silent film “The Man Who Laughs,” the story by Batman creator Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger is crude by today’s comic book standards but laid down all the key elements seen in Ledger’s dark take on the character.
