Jimmy ''Popeye'' Doyle (Gene Hackman) and his partner, Buddy Russo (Roy Scheider), are tough New York City detectives who uncover a drug-trafficking network originating in France. When Doyle and Russo discover that the drug ring's mastermind, Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey), is in the city, they stop at nothing to apprehend him. The volatile Doyle becomes particularly obsessed with bringing Charnier down, leading to a number of tense and highly memorable chase sequences.
