Consider Billy Beane the brainiac of baseball. As the general manager of the cash-strapped Oakland A’s, Beane was one of the first to assemble a team using computer-generated analysis instead of gut instinct. In “Moneyball,” opening Sept. 23, the tech-minded innovator is played by Brad Pitt as an unconventional, free-wheeling gambler—the guy who bet everything on a long shot.
